The last few days have been very amusing to me. For six years the president, and all of us, have waited for Congress to do something constructive about immigration. Congress has done nothing. And Republicans have not come up with any realistic way of dealing with the difficult issues involved.

At long last, the president has decided to act using executive powers, and members of Congress are outraged. I am pleased to finally see some movement on this perplexing problem. The president’s authority to do what he has done might be somewhat uncertain and his actions will undoubtedly be challenged in court, but at least he has had the gumption to propose a series of constructive and humane steps. I applaud him for taking this initiative.
