Behind a career-high 19 points from Patrice Toston, the Utah Valley women's basketball defeated in-state rival Weber State on Saturday, 61-40, at the UCCU Center.
Toston shot 8-for-11 from the field and also added a 3-pointer and two free throws. The Wolverine defense held the Wildcats to just 25 percent shooting from the field overall, while UVU shot 47.9 percent overall.
"I'm really proud of the girls. This is the fifth game in eight days, and that's not easy for any team at any level," head coach Cathy Nixon said. "I felt like we were able to control the tempo for most of the game. Toston was the bright spot for me. She was unbelieveable, and I think that is a sign of good things to come. She showed tonight that she can be a special player at this level."
The Wolverines led by five in the first half before an 8-0 run to take a 13-point lead, 28-15, at the break. In the second half, the streak continued with another 7-0 run and a 9-0 run to secure the win.
Karlee Norris added 12 points and led Utah Valley in rebounds with nine. Freshman Mariah Seals contributed 12 points and seven assists, while Rhaiah Spooner-Knight added 10 points. Rebecca MaWhinney snuck in three steals and two layups from steals.
Utah Valley plays two on the road beginning with UC Davis on Nov. 26 at 5:45 p.m., in Davis, California, followed by San Francisco on Nov. 29 at 3 p.m., in San Francisco.
