Utah Symphony will perform Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 on Dec. 5-6 at 8 p.m. at Abravanel Hall, 123 W. South Temple.

Utah Symphony Music Director Thierry Fischer will lead the orchestra in the performances. Soprano Celena Shafer, mezzo-soprano Cynthia Hanna, tenor Chad Shelton and bass-baritone Michael Dean will also join the orchestra for the symphony's final movement.

According to a press release from Utah Symphony, the work was Beethoven's final symphony and was considered unique for its length and use of vocalists. Symphony No. 9 also includes the well-known refrain "Ode to Joy."

Fischer and Toby Tolokan, Utah Symphony's vice president of artistic planning, will present a free pre-concert discussion for ticket holders at 7 p.m. each night on the orchestra level of Abravanel Hall.
