RIVERTON — A driver hauling 6,500 gallons of milk tipped the load onto its side Wednesday afternoon after police say he failed to make a turn.
But other than some spilled milk to clean up, the accident had an amazingly fortunate outcome, said Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal.
The tanker, which also had a pub trailer, attempted to make a left turn at the intersection of 12600 S. Bangerter Highway but was going too fast, Hoyal said. The large truck tipped onto its side, slid over the curb between a power pole and a light post without hitting them, and went onto the property of In-and-Out Burger where the truck came to rest right next to the drive-through lane.
Customers were waiting in line as the truck slid toward them. But no one was injured, Hoyal said. The 35-year-old truck driver suffered only minor injures.
The name of the man and the milk company he was driving for were not immediately released. Westbound 12600 South was closed for several hours while deputies investigated the accident and crews attempted to upright the truck. Eastbound 12600 South was restricted to one lane.
The case is expected to be turned over to the Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office following the completion of an investigation to be reviewed for possible charges.
