Behind a complete game effort from Andrew Freter, Utah Valley University defeated New Mexico State, 4-1, on Sunday at Presley Askew Field to win the three-game Western Athletic Conference series.
Sean Moysh doubled twice and Beau Kallas homered as the Wolverines (21-24, 13-8) had six extra base hits on the day. Greyson Bogden also had a two-run double that broke a 1-1 tie in the fourth.
"Freter was phenomenal today. He pitched around some defensive mishaps and just controlled the game completely,” UVU head coach Eric Madsen said. “We left a lot of scoring chances on the bases that would have given us some insurance but Andrew came through for us in a big game. It’s big to win a series on the road in league play this time of year.”
Freter allowed just four hits, all singles, and just two of those coming after the second inning. Both hits after the second, one in the fourth and one in the ninth, came on bad hops on the right side of the infield. He threw 119 pitches in moving to 4-6 on the year, while notching UVU’s second complete game effort of the weekend after Danny Beddes’ 10-strikeout performance in Friday’s win.
Down 1-0 in the third, Kallas hit his second home run of the series — and the team’s fifth of the weekend — to just right of the batter’s eye in center.
Bogden’s double came an inning later, past Derek Umphres at third, and scored Moysh and Mark Krueger to UVU a 3-1 lead. Seth Rhineer doubled in the seventh and scored on a two-out single by Riley White, who also tripled and had a three-hit day. White’s single was one of just two hits in 15 chances with runners in scoring position for the Wolverines.
Freter retired the side in order three times, and in two innings when the only baserunner reached on an error, he erased the runner by inducing double plays. He pitched to just five hitters over the minimum for the game.
The Wolverines now travel to Albuquerque to face New Mexico of the Mountain West Conference on Monday at 1 p.m. Seattle U will come to Orem for the final home series of the weekend beginning Friday at 6 p.m.
