PROVO — The BYU men’s soccer team rallied to beat Fresno Fuego 3-1 on Saturday at South Field.

“We have worked really hard for this,” said head coach Christopher Watkins. “We are ready to take on any competition, and I think this game really showcased our strengths."

The Cougars were down 1-0 in the first half after Fresno's No. 10, Jose Cuevas, scored in the 35th minute off a penalty kick.

With over 1,400 fans cheering, the Cougars tied the score 1-1 early in the second half when Pedro Vasconcelos scored in the 47th minute after a pass from Scott Heaton.

In the 58th minute Blake Frischknecht created an opportunity for Garrett Gee to score the second goal for the Cougars.

Blake Frischknecht scored the final goal in the 81st minute after he challenged three of Fresno’s defenders and then ripped a shot into the net. Following after, Frischknecht was awarded a yellow card for unsporting behavior due to removal of his jersey.

Two other cautions were awarded to the Cougars, one to Garrett Gee in the 59th minute and one to Jonathan Junca for unsporting behavior in the 76th minute.

The Cougars will play FC Tucson on South Field on May 8. Kickoff will be at 7:30 p.m. Tickets will be $6 for adults and $5 for children. Season passes will be available for $25.

The Cougars hold a 5-0 preseason record and a 1-0 season record. BYU competes in the USL Premier Development League (PDL), the fourth tier of the American Soccer Pyramid. BYU’s team is the first university-sponsored soccer program to purchase a franchise and compete at a higher level.
