Utahns are uniquely prepared for self-sufficiency in the event of a natural disaster. We store food and water, and regularly practice mock disaster responses. We also are uniquely gifted with more sunlight than most areas of the country. It seems like a no-brainer to put that sun to good use so that we can keep our furnaces and refrigerator running after a natural disaster.

Utahns should consider adding solar panels with a battery backup to our disaster preparedness toolkit. Not only would we cut our electric bills and pollution, we would also have electric power when the grid goes down.
