"9,000 MILES OF FATHERHOOD: Surviving Crooked Cops, Teenage Angst and Mexican Moonshine on a Journey to the End of the Road," by Kirk Millson, Plain Sight Publishing, $14.99, 195 pages (nf)
“9,000 Miles of Fatherhood” chronicles the odyssey of a man and his 13-year-old son, Peter, from Salt Lake City to Yaviza, Panama. Author Kirk Millson takes the reader on this adventure they had 12 years ago as he relates his nervousness with asking his spouse about taking the trip, along with the projected price tag. His wife surprisingly agrees.
Millson and Peter find themselves in an old, beat-up Dodge Dart that turns into a huge gas guzzler. At the beginning of the trip, both father and son are awkward in their relationship with each other. Time and experience help them see the best, and more so the worst, in each other, which forges a relationship that lasts them the rest of their lives.
There is swearing throughout the book along with some generally described violence, including a mugging. There are also some sexual references, including seeing prostitutes, and frequent alcohol consumption.
Millson lives in Salt Lake City with his wife.
is also placed in a position with a barmaid in which she forces herself onto him.
