MAGNA — A pedestrian was killed early Wednesday morning after he was hit by an SUV on state Route 201.
Burt Maez, 46, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which occurred shortly before 2 a.m. on state Route 201 near 8500 West, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.
UHP Sgt. Wyatt Weber said Maez stepped out into the road in front of an SUV. He said the driver of the SUV reported to police that he did not see Maez before the collision.
"There are no skid marks to indicate he even applied his breaks prior to impact and the impact was mostly to the right side of the vehicle, so it appears that he … just stepped out in front of the vehicle at the last minute and the driver was unable to do anything to avoid the collision," Weber said.
The SUV was traveling at about 50 mph before impact due to construction in the area, Weber said. The driver of the vehicle stopped and called 911.
Maez was not carrying any identification, but Weber said officers identified him through "tattoos and body markings."
Police are unsure why Maez was in the area that sees little to no pedestrian traffic, is not well-lit and is undergoing construction. Weber said investigators confirmed that Maez did not work for either of the construction companies working in the area.
"There's not a lot of evidence on scene," Weber said.
