SANTAQUIN, Utah County — Two women were killed and a boy was injured Saturday after a vehicle rolled on I-15 near Santaquin.
Diana Manzo, 25, of Mapleton, and Sabrina Rasmussen, 21, of Springville, died of their injuries after the crash, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.
About 3:15 p.m., the northbound vehicle began taking an off-ramp when it overcorrected back onto the freeway and rolled, according to UHP Sgt. Mary Kaye Lucas.
Manzo and Rasmussen, neither of them wearing seat belts, were ejected from the vehicle and died on the scene, Lucas said. Rasmussen's 17-year-old brother who was buckled in was taken to a local hospital for minor injuries, she said.
Witnesses told police that the Pontiac Grand Am had been driving "recklessly" prior to the crash, "aggressively passing other motorists," Lucas said. Police said the car's speed likely was also a contributing factor.
Manzo was driving the vehicle, and Rasmussen was in the passenger seat, Lucas said. The two were known to be close friends.
All northbound lanes in the area were temporarily closed while police investigated the crash.
"We always like to tell people to slow down and watch your speed. Always wear your seat belt," she said. "Take the opportunity to make yourself as safe as possible."
