HOOPER, Weber County — A near head-on collision early Sunday killed one man and wounded four other people.

Police say a Cadillac was traveling south on 5900 West in Hooper and a Toyota Prius was headed north when the two vehicles collided at 5900 South.

The Cadillac lost control and crashed into a ditch. All four occupants had to be extricated by Weber County firefighters, according to Weber County Sheriff's Lt. Lane Findlay.

Nicholas James Morse, 29, from West Point, died later Sunday morning from injuries he sustained in the back seat of the Cadillac, according to Findlay. It was unknown if he was wearing a seat belt.

The driver of the Prius, a 17-year-old male, was in critical condition Sunday afternoon from head trauma. He was not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown through the passenger window, Findlay said. The other three in the Cadillac were being treated for injuries that were not life threatening.

All five people were taken to local hospitals.

The lieutenant said the cause of the crash remained under investigation. Both drivers agreed to provide blood samples for an alcohol test, but it was still unclear if alcohol was a factor.

"We don't know how it occurred exactly, but somehow those vehicles ended up crashing nearly head-on," Findlay said.

He said it was the second fatal accident in Weber County over the weekend.

"It's just tragic, and you see the loss and the heartache that's suffered by the families," he said. "We just want to remind everyone to slow down, watch the road and of course, always wear a seatbelt."
