KATIE TOOLE, Viewmont, girls basketball: Senior Katie Toole led the Vikings to two key victories last week.
She helped the Vikings beat Davis in overtime with 20 points, and then she led the team in their win over previously unbeaten Layton High with 23 points.
She is averaging nearly 25 points per game this season and has helped Viewmont to third place in the region standings.
The 5-foot-9 shooting guard who signed a scholarship to play basketball for Utah State is also the defending 5A girls high jump champion. She is also a standout in the 200 meters, 400 meters and 4x400-meter relay for the Vikings’ track team. She works just as hard off the court, maintaining a 3.58 GPA.
NOAH MONTANO, Cottonwood, boys basketball: It’s been a tough season for the Colts, but this junior guard gave everyone something to cheer about last week, even in a loss.
Montano tied a 22-year-old state record last Tuesday when he knocked down a staggering 12 3-pointers in a 95-87 loss to Taylorsville.
Montano finished the game 12 of 20 from 3-point range and a career-high 41 points.
He equaled the previous record held by Monument Valley’s Delbert Slim back in 1993.
Montano is averaging 17.8 points and 3.3 3-pointers so far this season. A year ago he made contributions to the varsity squad as well, averaging 9.4 points and 1.3 3-pointers.
