AMERICAN FORK — Coming off a big win over Lone Peak, American Fork was looking for its fourth straight win against Herriman, but the Mustangs had other ideas.
Herriman (9-5, 2-2) beat American Fork like it was nothing Tuesday night, and the fact the Mustangs crushed the No. 1 team in their region, 68-48, made it that much sweeter.
It was the Mustangs' second consecutive win over the Cavemen, but fans can expect the Cavemen to put up a good fight in the rematch against Herriman Feb. 13 at Herriman.
American Fork (9-6, 3-1) made a comeback in the third quarter and pulled within 10 points, but trailed 44-27 heading into the final quarter.
Herriman's David Maynard led all scorers with 33 points and eight rebounds, and teammate Jaden Vaughn added 16, four rebounds and three assists.
American Fork's Spencer Johnson, who scored 21 points, tried to keep the team in it, but they could not make enough plays down the stretch. Dallin Harley added 16 points and eight rebounds for the Cavemen.
Momentum seemed to be in Herriman's hands practically the entire game, and whenever American Fork made a big play, the Mustangs made a big one of their own and the momentum would always swing back into Herriman's favor.
