CHEYENNE, Wyo. — A Wyoming legislative panel is set to consider a bill to allow people who hold concealed carry permits to take guns onto school grounds and into public meetings.
Supporters say the bill going before the House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday would improve public safety. They say established gun-free zones such as school campuses can attract criminals intent on committing violence against people they assume will be unarmed.
Sponsor Rep. Allen Jaggi, a Lyman Republican, says allowing teachers to carry guns on school campuses has worked well in Utah for years.
The Wyoming Education Association represents educators in the state and opposes Jaggi's bill.
Association President Kathy Vetter says her group believes putting more resource officers on school campuses is a better way to improve campus safety.
