Timpview standout and 2014 Deseret News Mr. Football winner Britain Covey announced through Twitter on Tuesday that he will head to the University of Utah.
"Excited to announce my commitment to the University of Utah," said Covey, a three-star recruit according to 247 Sports, in the post.
He also had offers from BYU, Utah State and Harvard.
"Although Covey plays quarterback for the Thunderbirds, he's likely to play at either receiver or defensive back at the next level," said Deseret News sports writer Brandon Gurney about Covey. "The 5-foot-9, 170-pound recruit has proven to be an exceptional playmaker and recently picked up an offer from Utah, and it's likely other schools will follow."
Covey led Timpview to a 4A title as a quarterback. He completed 71.9 percent of his passes on the year, throwing for 2,602 yards and 30 touchdowns. He also ran for a team-high 1,640 yards and 26 touchdowns for the Thunderbirds.
Covey jumps from one Whittingham to the other in the process of committing to the Utes. He played for Cary Whittingham at Timpview and will play for Cary's older brother Kyle Whittingham at Utah.
Despite the family tie in coaching, Cary told the Deseret News on Tuesday that he believes that had no impact on his decision.
"I think Utah was his first offer and I might have had a little bit to do with putting him on the radar in the terms of letting the coaches at Utah know I had something special on my hands, but as far as making his decision as far as I know that was 100 percent him," Cary said. "I talked to him a little bit here and there, and I talked to his mom and even she didn't know what he was thinking. So, I would guess they didn't have a lot of influence on it either. I don't really knows the hows and whys he made his decision, but it will work out for him."
It's the second local commitment Utah has received already this week. The Utes also received a commitment Monday from American Fork offensive lineman James Empey. Empey is a three-star recruit, according to scout.com.
Gabe Reid, a three-star defensive end recruit from Timpview remains undecided. Cary Whittingham said he's unsure if Covey's committment will lead Reid to Utah also. Reid has an offer from Utah among other schools.
"(Reid) is still pretty interested in Stanford, and I know BYU is still in the picture," Cary Whittingham said. "I think it will be a little bit influential that Britain has now decided to pull the trigger and go there. I don't have any real insight on what direction he's leaning, I do know that between those three schools there are a lot of things to like."
