Gay-rights advocates should view the compromise proposed Tuesday by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints “as an olive branch, not a trick,” according to Jonathan Rauch of the New York Daily News.
This week’s rare press conference from four top LDS leaders is being met with open arms and harsh criticism, according to Rauch, who argues that the LDS Church’s press conference “appears to be a genuine change of tone.”
The church’s support for anti-discrimination legislation calls for fair protection for LGBT people in their access to housing and employment. Additionally, the church seeks protection of religious freedom under the banner of anti-discrimination.
Rauch concluded that when it comes to the LDS Church’s stance on anti-discrimination legislation “gay-rights leaders would be remiss not so seize” this opportunity for discussion.
