Junior Jason Lynch set the Utah Valley University men's indoor track and field 5000m record on Friday with a time of 14:45.16, with a TFRRS altitude adjusted time of 14:24.84, at the Mountain States Games hosted by Idaho State in Pocatello at the Holt Arena.

Lynch's record gave him the victory in the event and is almost 15 seconds faster than the previous record set by Josh McCabe in 2012. Lynch was the first across the line followed by seven other Wolverines finishing the race in less than 16 minutes and all in the top 12.

Seth Gutzwiller finished third overall and second for Utah Valley with a time of 15:27.27. He was followed across the line by Logan Petty in fourth with a time 15:27.63. Jaydn Asay finished in eighth place with a time of 15:46.61. Chris Brower, Taylor Travis and Rush Mills rounded out the eight Wolverines finishing 10th (15:52.98), 11th (15:55.79) and 12th (15:56.48), respectively.

"The core group of men that won their second consecutive WAC cross-country title last fall showed their strength in the 5K, led by Jason Lynch, who broke the school record by nearly 15 seconds," associate head coach Kirke Adamson said.

On the women's side, senior Ivie Gonsalves finished fourth overall in the 5000m with a time of 18:23.73, while Bridget Hazel finished seventh with a time of 18:41.05. Savannah Berry closed the group and came in ninth place with a time of 18:49.90.

The women wrapped up the pentathlon with junior Ashli Schulz taking third place overall with 3,253 points. Schulz finished in first place in the 800m run with a time of 2:23.76 in her race. She grabbed a seventh-place finish in the high jump with a jump of 1.50m for 621 points, a third-place finish in the 60m hurdles with a time of 9.21 seconds and 867 points, and a throw of 8.94m in the shot put that earned her ninth place and 460 points. Schulz also jumped 4.90m in the long jump for 532 points.

Jessica Beatty finished in first place in the 60m hurdles portion of the pentathlon with a time of 8.98 seconds, earning her 914 points. Beatty cleared 1.38m in the high jump for 491 points and finished in seventh place in the shot put with a mark of 9.35m for 487 points. She ran the 800m with a time of 2:39.52 seconds for 578 points. On the day, Beatty finished the pentathlon with 2,470 points.

Tarin Strosser cleared 1.47m in the high jump for 588 points, ran the 60m hurdles in 10.0 seconds for 712 points and finished in first place in the shot put with a throw of 11.30m for 615 points. Strosser followed after Beatty in the 800m with a time of 2:41.89 for 551 points. She also finished in sixth place in the long jump with a mark of 5.02m for 565 points. Strosser finished the pentathlon with 3,031 points.

"While a strong final score was a focus of today's competition, we were really looking to execute the technical aspects of each event and we had a lot of success," Adamson said.

On the men's side, Rusty Jones currently leads the heptathlon after the first day's events with 2,851 points. Jones finished in first place in the 60m dash with a time of 7.08 seconds awarding him 854 points. Jones also won the long jump with a mark of 6.59m for 718 points. He threw the shot put 11.16m for 556 points and also won the high jump with a mark of 1.91m for an additional 723 points.

Chris Canseco ran the 60m dash in 7.56 seconds, good enough for 694 points. In the long jump, Canseco jumped for 5.56m to earn 494 points. Canseco threw the shot put for 8.89m for 419 points and cleared 1.52m in the high jump for 404 points. Canseco has 2,011 points after four events of the heptathlon.

Chandler Rieske finished the 60m dash with a time of 7.60 seconds for 681 points and leapt for 6.07m in the long jump to earn 602 points. Rieske threw the shot put 11.12m for 553 points and cleared 1.67m in the high jump for an additional 520 points. After the first day's events, Rieske has 2,356 points.

The Wolverines continue to compete Saturday with the remaining heptathlon events. Results can be found on UVU's website following the completion of the meet.
