KEARNS — A man was hospitalized in critical condition Saturday night after police say he was hit by a car while crossing the street against a red light.

The accident occurred about 8:30 p.m. near 5400 South and Northwest Avenue, said Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal. The 62-year-old man was transported to Intermountain Medical Center.

Hoyal said a 16-year-old girl was driving a black Lexus passenger car east on 5400 south in the middle lane.

"The vehicle in front of her swerved to avoid the pedestrian and she was unable to avoid him and struck him in the driver's side of her car," Hoyal said. "According to witnesses, (the pedestrian) was crossing against a red light. The driver had a green light to go through the intersection."

The man was in the crosswalk when he was hit. His name was not released. The 16-year-old was not injured.

"It's always important that people follow the traffic signals," Hoyal said. "That's ultimately what's going to keep individuals safe."
