You look back on those guys’ careers and they’re the guys you grow up wanting to be like. It’s just amazing to have my name up there with those guys. – Tyler Haws
PROVO — Going into Saturday’s game against Santa Clara, BYU guard Tyler Haws needed just three points to eclipse Danny Ainge for No. 2 on the school’s career scoring list.
Haws got it out of the way early in the Cougars' 78-57 victory over the Broncos.
He tied Ainge at 2,467 points less than one minute into game on a jump shot. Then, a little more than one minute later, Haws vaulted past Ainge on one of his patented fadeaway mid-range jumpers.

Before the game, “I had heard I needed ‘three points’ from a ton of people,” Haws said. So, when the ball settled into the net “it did cross my mind" that he had moved to No. 2 overall.
Haws, with 2,486 points, now trails BYU’s career scoring leader, Jimmer Fredette, by 113 points. Fredette finished with 2,599 — a record that was set four years ago.
“It is a really cool thing,” Haws said. “You look back on those guys’ careers and they’re the guys you grow up wanting to be like. It’s just amazing to have my name up there with those guys.”
“That’s an amazing thing,” coach Dave Rose said of Haws’ feat. “You pass a BYU Cougar legend like Danny Ainge. It’ll hit him probably sometime this weekend that that’s quite an accomplishment.”
“He’s an amazing worker,” guard Skyler Halford said of Haws. “I’ve known him since he was young. He deserves all of the credit that everyone gives him because he’s an amazing basketball player. I’m super proud of him. I’m happy for him. He’s not one to even say anything about it — he’s such a team guy.”
Haws scored 21 points Saturday, which marked the 67th 20-point game of his career — tying him with Michael Smith for No. 1 in that category in BYU history.
PERFECT VS. BRONCOS: Santa Clara is the only West Coast Conference team that BYU has never lost to since joining the league four years ago. The Cougars are now 8-0 against the Broncos since 2012. BYU leads the all-time series, 23-5.
