SALT LAKE CITY — A man who intervened when he saw his neighbor's car being broken into was stabbed twice in the head with a screwdriver early Sunday.

Just after 3 a.m., a man in the 1940 block of Wildflower Drive (765 North) heard a car alarm going off, said Salt Lake Police Lt. John Beener. The man went outside to investigate and found someone trying to steal the stereo out of his neighbor's car.

He told the man to stop. The burglar cursed at the man and continued burglarizing the vehicle, according to police.

"The neighbor told him again to basically, 'You need to knock it off.' They got into some kind of a scuffle and the guy that was trying to steal the stereo ended up stabbing him with a screwdriver, like puncture wounds, on the side and back of his head," Beener said.

The burglar ran off with the stereo and was picked up by someone driving a black Dodge pickup truck with an extended cab. The neighbor was originally taken to the hospital in critical condition but was later upgraded to fair condition, Beener said.

Police continued to look for two suspects and the getaway car on Sunday. The pickup had a Texas license plate No. DPX5117. Anyone with information can call police at 801-799-3000.
