Christians observe Ash Wednesday, begin Lent

Christians in Utah and throughout the world began the season of Lent on Wednesday by observing Ash Wednesday at the Cathedral of the Madeleine and other churches. Congregants had ashes traced on their forehead in the form of a cross and commonly hear the directive: "Turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel." Ashes have their roots in the Bible as a symbol of repentance. Lent commemorates the 40 days Jesus spent in the wildnerness before his entrance to Jerusalem, crucifixion and resurrection.
