Utah has spurned Medicaid expansion although the governor has made gentle attempts to move it through without hurting himself politically. The reason given is that, at some future time, we won’t be able to afford to pay for an expanded entitlement program.

My wife was injured in a car accident years ago and has suffered from chronic neck pain. I tried to be understanding, but until I suffered an injury to my own neck, I didn’t fully appreciate her suffering. Perhaps you who govern are covered by care plans and haven’t experienced medical need without the coverage.

Many can agree that Obamacare has serious problems, one of which is that it doesn’t really make health care more “affordable.” It also goes against Republican sensibility when it comes to self-reliance, less government and personal accountability. But ought we withhold help from suffering people because we’re upset with the liberal agenda? “We wish we could get rid of the law, but since we can’t right now, there is one thing we can do: Refuse to expand Medicaid.” Is this where we want to put up our roadblock, keeping a sick person from care?
