UVU track: Wolverines prep for WAC Championships at Wildcat Open

Taylor Gomez led the charge in the 800m run Saturday at the Wildcat Indoor Open in the Swenson Gym at Weber State in Ogden when a group of three Wolverines finished in the top five in the event.

Gomez finished in third place overall with a time of 2:17.04, just ahead of Kami Hartley with a time of 2:20.49. Caity Beddes rounded out the group with a time of 2:21.15.

Makayla Stepp finished in first place in the 3000m run with a time of 10:55.56, and Becca Hutton finished in sixth place overall in the weight throw with a mark of 15.95m.

"We definitely got what we came for out of this meet," head coach Scott Houle said. "Our athletes came and competed and there will be a big travel team shift for our conference meet. We had great performances in all of our events today, but our standout performance was Mike Fogt in the 55m hurdles. The men in the pole vault also had a great day, as well as women who competed in the 800m. We, as coaches, have our work cut out for us to decide who we will be taking to the conference meet."

Mike Fogt finished in third place overall in the men's 55m dash with a time of 6.45 seconds, good enough to move him up on the all-time depth charts.

Alex Pearson finished in second place in the 800m run with a time of 1:58.33, and Kyler Sprague finished in third in the 55m hurdles with a time of 7.77 seconds.

Levi Ball and teammate Chris Canseco tied for first place with a mark of 4.50m. Rusty Jones and Chance Carlton finished in second and third place in the long jump, respectively, with marks of 6.40m and 6.39m.

The Wolverines compete next at the WAC Indoor Conference Championships at the Air Force Academy on Feb. 26-28, at the Cadet Fieldhouse.
