High School Football: James Empey, Lopini Katoa highlight American Fork's Signing Day celebration

AMERICAN FORK — American Fork High has had a great year of football; one indicator is that five of its student athletes signed Wednesday and will be playing at the collegiate level next season.

James Empey: Empey is an offensive lineman for American Fork who will go on his mission before playing for University of Utah. He was a captain for the Cavemen and helped lead them to a 11-3 record and get to the state championship.

Lopini Katoa: Katoa is one of the best running backs in the state of Utah and an all-around athlete. He will be a Beaver next season, playing for Oregon State University. Katoa had 1,655 yards on the season, averaging 5.8 yards per carry and 118 yards per game.

Nick Bernardo: Bernardo is a captain and outside linebacker for the Cavemen. He has chosen to play for Southern Utah University. Bernardo had a great season for American Fork, getting a total of 56 tackles on the season, averaging four per game, and even added 8.5 sacks to his season.

Nate Heaps: Heaps plays tight end for American Fork. He will be playing for Weber State University next year. He has great size for his position, at 6-foot-4 and 235 pounds. He got 689 yards on the season, averaging 11 yards per catch and 49 yards per game.

American Fork had a lot of talent this season, and you can look for every one of these players to make some noise at the collegiate level.

Ben Cummings, another player for American Fork, will also be playing college football at William Penn.
