OGDEN — In an attempt to completely revamp the struggling Weber State football program, Wildcats head coach Jay Hill really isn’t fooling around.

After inking a whopping 34 student-athletes just one year ago in his first recruiting class, Hill added to the splash Wednesday by announcing that an impressive 32 student-athletes signed national letters of intent to play football for the ‘Cats this season, totaling 66 signed players over the last two national signing days.

“Once again, we are really excited about this year’s recruiting class. This was another very solid class and we were able to get a lot of quality players,” said Hill. “I truly believe that this is a tremendous signing class, and I feel very confident that they will be successful.”

Hill and the Wildcats continued to ride their trend of rebuilding and, as it turned out, they didn’t have to look too far for the pieces.

Over the last two seasons, 40 of Weber State’s 66 players have come from the state of Utah.

“A large percentage of recruits are from the state of Utah, which is a big priority for us. Our coaching staff did a great job of recruiting and getting the players we targeted,” Hill said. “There are some very good players here in the state of Utah. There is a toughness and a great work ethic in a lot of these kids, and the caliber of football in Utah continues to grow and I couldn’t be happier with where we are right now.”

So, exactly what is going to be the big difference this year from recent years for the Wildcats?

Of course, they need to fill holes on their offensive line, become a lot more physical on both sides of the ball, take care of the football, step up and make big plays when they need to, and eventually decide on a quarterback.

“We did a great job getting guys to provide us with depth on the O-line, and I think we did a really good job of adding three more really solid playmakers to our wide receiver group; that will be a huge strength of ours,” said Hill. “We added some really strong secondary players in the back end, and I really like what we did with our skill players and with our really solid running backs.”

Hill says he has noticed a colossal difference in the locker room throughout his two-year tenure at the helm of the ‘Cats.

“Down in that locker room, it is just a completely different feel than it has been in years past. I mean, it’s a completely different feel,” Hill added. “These kids are working really hard and pushing themselves to the limit mentally and physically every day, getting good grades and will be ready to go. We are building something you guys and we can be proud of.”
