USU golf: Aggies open 2015 spring season at Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational

Utah State's men's golf team begins its 2015 spring season on Monday, Feb. 9, at the 11th annual Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational hosted by Southern Utah University. The two-day tournament will be held at the Sunbrook Golf Club in St. George, Utah.

The 36-hole tournament will be contested over the Point and Black Rock nines. The tournament will play at par-72 over the 6,781-yard layout.

This year's 13-team field includes Boise State, Cal State Northridge, College of Charleston, Dixie State, Long Beach State, North Dakota, Northern Kentucky, Oral Roberts, Utah State, Utah Valley, Weber State, Westminster and host Southern Utah.

Scheduled to compete for the Aggies will be seniors Grahm Schmaltz and Zach Waxler, juniors Brennan Coburn and Seokwon Jeon, and sophomore McCoy Willey, while fellow sophomore Eli Rogers will compete as an individual.

During its fall season, Utah State played in five tournaments with its best finish coming at the Weber State hosted Battle in the Tetons as USU finished first out of six teams with a 7-under 857 (294-276-287) for its first tournament win since 2009.

Sophomore Tanner Jenson led Utah State during the fall season as he had a stroke average of 72.50 over 14 rounds, including a second-place finish at the Battle in the Tetons with a collegiate-best 6-under 210 (74-64-72). Jeon had a stroke average of 73.00 over 14 rounds last fall, Schmaltz had a stroke average of 73.07 over 14 rounds, Coburn had a stroke average of 73.67 over three rounds, Willey had a stroke average of 74.36 over 14 rounds, Rogers had a stroke average of 76.00 over three rounds and Waxler had a stroke average of 77.00 over 11 rounds.

Last year, Utah State finished tied for fourth place at the Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational with an 8-over 584 (297-287). Individually, Jeon tied for third place with a 4-under 140 (70-70), and Coburn tied for 45th with a 10-over 154 (77-77).
