SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah House of Representatives passed a bill Monday that would outlaw powdered alcohol mixes.

HB48, sponsored by Rep. Steve Eliason, R-Sandy, would make it illegal for people or retailers to possess, use or sell powdered alcohol, a substance that Eliason said is easily misused or abused.

He said it can be discretely mixed in drinks, which is especially concerning in potential date-rape situations.

Rep. Jack Draxler, R-North Logan, said he’s disappointed that the bill is only now passing the House this late into the Legislative session.

“There is a potential crisis here with this product,” Draxler said.

HB48 passed through the House with a 68-5 vote. It now moves on to the Senate.
