I am a math teacher and do not like HB203, which will raise teacher salaries for math, science and special-ed teachers. I am for an increase in salary for teachers, but this bill needs to be amended because it is too exclusive.

HB203, drafted by Rep. Brad Last, R-Hurricane, is a substitute for the Teacher Salary Supplement Program (HB337), which currently gives math and science teachers an extra $4,100 per year. I have been a full-time math teacher for the past few years and do not qualify for TSSP, and I will not qualify for the new increase simply because my college degree was not in math. I earned a degree in meteorology, a math-teaching endorsement and a master's degree in education, yet I still do not qualify.

There are many other math and science educators who also do not qualify for the increase. English teachers as well as other teachers work just as hard and should receive an increase. This kind of legislation, if not fixed, will continue driving teachers to find careers that will pay them a salary to match their skill set.
