All the allure of Saturday’s hoops action lived up to the hype.
In a day where three of the conference races could be decided, a day where bubble teams had one last shot at a signature win before the conference tournaments, much of the possible came to life.
Boise State, a bubble team, went on the road and knocked off San Diego State for the Mountain West lead. Hours later, BYU stunned Gonzaga on the road in its regular season finale and in a potential last chance at a top 25 RPI win.
The two bubble teams may have found themselves on the right side of the discussion at the right time.
Then there’s Arizona.
The Wildcats also made a statement on Saturday. Arizona outmuscled Utah in a close-knit game to clinch at least a share of the Pac-12 regular season title. With Gonzaga now out of the picture, Arizona is making a strong case for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament, which is just two weeks away.
So, after sorting it all out, here is an attempt to rank the top 10 teams in the West.
Note: As always, honorable-mention candidates are based on leaders of conferences that did not appear in the top 10 and do not necessarily mean they are the top teams outside of the chosen top 10. Conferences included in these power rankings are Big Sky, Big West, Mountain West, Pac-12, Western Athletic and West Coast. Use of KenPom.com, Massey and RPI ratings are not the absolute basis of the power rankings, but an idea where teams hold up in national metrics ratings.
