LOS ANGELES – The Utah baseball team dropped a low-scoring pitcher’s duel to UCLA on Saturday afternoon, 3-0.
The two teams combined for just eight hits on the day — three for the Utes and five for UCLA — with timely hitting lifting the Bruins to their runs for the win.
Dalton Carroll pitched 6 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on five hits with four strikeouts and a walk. He falls to 3-3 with the loss. Brock Duke entered in the seventh, throwing 1 1/3 innings with a strikeout and a walk.
UCLA took a quick 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first after a leadoff walk came around to score on a ground out following a sacrifice fly and a single. The Bruins added a run in the bottom of the fifth as a leadoff single scored on an RBI double and continued to add to their lead after a pair of hits in the sixth inning sent home a run for a 3-0 advantage.
Utah had runners on base in five different innings. Cody Scaggari, Wyler Smith and Josh Rose had the Utes’ three hits. The Bruins used four pitchers for the shutout.
Utah and UCLA close out the three-game series on Sunday at 1 p.m. PT.
