DRAKE COOK, Viewmont, soccer: This sophomore forward has already had a big impact on the 2015 high school soccer just one week in.

Cook scored three goals in the opening week to lead the No. 4 Vikings to a pair of victories.

In the opener against Woods Cross, a 3-0 victory, he played solid up top. Against Bountiful three days later he scored a hat trick, including the game-winner in overtime, in a 3-2 triumph over the rival Braves.

"Drake has a knack of reading the game extremely well. He strikes a great ball and is a definite threat to score on set pieces," said Viewmont coach Dave Wigham.

Viewmont returns to action today at Alta, where Cook will look to keep his hot streak alive.

MCCALL SPERRY, Juab, softball: McCall Sperry has loads of athletic talent, but the four-year starter isn't content to rely on natural ability.

"She's spent hours and hours in the gym this winter to prepare herself for softball," said Juab head coach Alley Gee of the senior pitcher. "She's naturally talented, but she still works really hard."

A volleyball player and honor student, Sperry doesn't say much, but when she does it's usually aimed at lifting up or instilling confidence in her teammates.

"She's more of a silent leader, but she's the first one to come over and say, 'You got this' after a mistake," Gee said.

And if the coach had to choose which if Sperry's many athletic gifts helps her succeed on the softball field most it would be "her mind," Gee said. "She's so mentally tough. She's scrappy; she's a fighter."
