HURRICANE, Washington County — A man sustained serious injuries after his plane crashed Saturday morning just north of the Hurricane Municipal Airport.

"Witnesses reported seeing this plane, which is an experimental plane, take off from the … airport and make two circles in the area and then went down in the area reported," said Hurricane Police Sgt. Brandon Buell.

The 62-year-old man piloting the plane was taken by ambulance to Dixie Regional Medical Center in serious condition with a laceration to his head and a possible broken leg, Buell said. He was the only person in the plane.

The plane reportedly crashed because of mechanical difficulties as the pilot tried to land the aircraft just before 11 a.m. The plane's engine stalled, according to Buell. The plane crashed in a nearby field and traveled about 150 feet, colliding with a fence.

The plane was totaled in the crash, which was still under investigation Saturday. The Federal Aviation Administration was notified of the incident.
