MILLCREEK — A Millcreek man was killed late Friday after being hit by an SUV.

Shortly after 11 p.m., officers arrived at 3900 South and State Street, where they say the northbound vehicle struck 26-year-old Michael Andrews, who was walking in the south crosswalk.

Unified police detective Ken Hansen said when the vehicle struck the man, it "moved him all the way across the intersection to a point just north of the north crosswalk."

Andrews was pronounced dead at the scene.

"At this point, we don't know if he was walking against the light, but we suspect that he was," Hansen said. "It was a pretty significant impact."

The detective said it was unclear how fast the vehicle was driving, but the SUV also sustained "significant" damage. The speed limit at that intersection is 40 mph, he said.

The initial investigation took time, Hansen said, because the driver and sole occupant of the white SUV only speaks Chinese. A translator was eventually found, and officers were able to reconstruct the incident.

No citations have been filed, but because the incident was fatal, the Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office will review the case to determine if charges will be filed.

Currently, it appears to be an accident, he said.

"Now that the weather is warm, there are a lot more people out walking on the street. They don't always follow the rules of pedestrians for a variety of reasons," he said. "You really have to take a close look and, of course, the slower you go, the more time you have to sort things out."
