An article I read on Sunday (“Does your child know the Bible well enough,” June 14) demonstrates the idea of using competition to achieve something of value. In the article, the author explains The National Bible Bee, which is like a spelling bee, but for children with knowledge of the Bible. I love this idea, because the Bible is one of the many books that provides powerful standards for life that are best learned at an early age.

The downside I could see to such an approach to learning is that the children would only have their eyes on the prize money and not on applying what they learn. Still, there are worse things to do with one’s time.
