Deseret News NBA draft rewind: Phily’s big men; crying fans and breaking down Jazz’s lottery pick

As rumors swirled and WojBombs fell, Deseret News sports writers and contributors debated and commented during Thursday's NBA draft. The resulting email chain and Twitter conversation turned into a quick rewind of the draft.

We started with an hour to go before the first pick.

DAVID SMITH: To be a fly on the wall in the Jazz's war room ... I imagine there are so many moving parts right now. To be honestly, I would not be surprised with any scenario — moving up, moving down, trading out, picking up players or future picks, etc. Thankfully, Dennis Lindsey, Justin Zanik and company are well prepared. They've done their homework. In fact, with over 100 workouts and such a robust scouting department, I wonder if any team does more. T-minus one hour...

AARON MORTON: I usually give GMs the benefit of a doubt. They are the ones with the most information … unless your David Kahn. Then I yell your name like it’s Star Trek II.

MITCH KUNZLER: There's been a ton of talk about Justise Winslow's offensive ability, and that's likely because that's what was on full display during the NCAA Tournament. But this guy was also an exceptional defender at the college level, and his length, quickness and awareness give him tremendous potential to do the same in the NBA. He could end up being the steal of the entire draft, and just what the Jazz need to take the next step. I'd love to see him in Utah.

SMITH: Sounds like Charlotte is honing in on Frank Kaminsky. He will certainly have a pair of great teammates there in Al Jefferson and Marvin Williams.

KINCADE UPSTILL: I think Jazz would like to move up. But are they will to trade any of the core players to do so? I think (Trey) Burke is who they are willing move. But he doesn't get you very far.

KUNZLER: Karl-Anthony Towns (19), Andrew Wiggins (20) and Ricky Rubio (24), is quite the young and promising trio going forward if Minnesota can keep them together long-term. And yes, I purposely left out Anthony Bennett.

KUNZLER: The Lakers taking D'Angelo Russell at No. 2 makes me think that they feel confident that they can get LaMarcus Aldridge, Kevin Love or Greg Monroe this offseason.

RYAN MILLER: Most depressing thing ever? Walking into the ESA press room to find the soft serve ice cream machine is not there. Sad face emoji.

TATE: You have to imagine that since Aldridge mentioned the Spurs first that they were going to make moves to sign him while still signing Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili, so this lends me to think they have something in the works for DeMarcus Cousins or Love.

UPSTILL: Agreed, Lakers definitely plan on a key free agent big this offseason. Would love to see them strike out.

KUNZLER: The Sixers have Jahlil Okafor, Nerlens Noel and Joel Embiid. Ridiculous.

TATE: With Okafor going the the Sixers, would they trade Embiid?

KUNZLER: Embiid just tweeted "OK.........Lol"

TATE: I am watching some off shore gambling/betting sites and currently Embiid being traded is showing –120. Not quite even money but leaning toward him being traded.

UPSTILL: Embiid value is super low with foot issue. Wouldn't get value.

MORTON: That won’t be the first time that Knicks fan/kid will be crying after a Knicks pick in his lifetime.

TATE: Sacramento pick has everyone in Vegas saying the same thing:

1. Aldridge to San Antonio
2. Cousins to L.A.
3. And if that happens George Karl is on the hot seat

UPSTILL: (Yahoo's) Adrian Wojnarowski said Charlotte has multiple options for trades. Target Winslow.

TATE: I said earlier that he was a Dwyane Wade according to Coach K. Is the D-Wade era officially over in Miami?

KUNZLER: Pat Riley is a tough customer. This could be a clear message to Wade: Sign for less, or see ya later. Winslow would've been a great player for Utah. I think he'll be a star. He'll do well in Miami. So Wojnarowski says the Jazz are listening to trade overtures for their pick. With Winslow off the board, they must not love anyone on the board at 12.

TATE: Versatility but meh.

KUNZLER: Yeah, I was thinking along the same lines as Jalen Rose. Take Devin Booker, and get that shooting ability on the floor. Not a terrible pick though.

TORIN KOOS: The Jazz drafted a guy they hope can turn into a stretch-4 shooter. He might have Trey as a first name, but he shot 13 percent behind the arc in college. This is bad. But the real question is: Is this Apple Maps bad or just Microsoft Zune bad?

TATE: Trey Lyles is the only big man prospect in Chad Ford's top 100 who had less than 50 percent field goal percentage and averaged less than one block per 40 minutes.

CARTER WILLIAMS: To be fair, Lyles attempted less than one attempt per game from 3 and 29 all season. Not the greatest sample size.

MILLER: And his shot isn't broken. Sure, he's not going to light the world on fire, but should be better than 13 percent.

SAM BENSON: Cameron Payne for OKC. Payne isn't a lottery-value point guard. Jerian Grant is much better. Should've picked a big man.
