CANYONLANDS NATIONAL PARK — A Kanab man missing since June 21 was found dead in the Davis Canyon area Saturday.

Kenneth Johnson, 69, was last seen in Monticello and was known to be visiting archeological sites before the time of his death, according to the San Juan County Sheriff's Office.

Johnson was found about 3 p.m. by police and National Park Service Rangers responding to a report of vehicle matching the description of the man's dark blue 2006 Jeep Liberty, according to officials.

When officers arrived at the scene, Johnson's vehicle was reportedly stuck in the sand, with digging marks near the tires, and Johnson's body was found 50 feet away from the vehicle in the shade of a cedar tree, according to a news release.

Because Johnson had a history of heart disease and was found with a shovel still in his hands, officials believe heart problems occurring while Johnson attempted to dig out his vehicle may have contributed to his death.

Johnson's body will be sent to the Utah Medical Examiner's Office to determine the cause of death.
