I would like to respond to the recent letter (“College-induced poverty,” May 31) regarding the affordability of college (or lack thereof).

When I started college in 1974, it took 195 hours of minimum-wage work to pay for a full year of tuition at the University of Utah. Today it takes 1,130 hours of minimum-wage work to pay for a full year of tuition. Either the minimum wage is way too low, or tuition is way too high. I suspect it's some of both, but it is not a sustainable situation.

A nation in which only the children of the rich can attend college is not a nation in which you want to live.
