WEST VALLEY CITY — Keeping the lights on isn't all fun and games, but dozens of journeymen and apprentice electrical workers got to play on the poles on Saturday as they competed in the 22nd Annual Utah Lineman's Rodeo.

Safety, neatness and ability, equipment handling and experience were tested throughout various events, including climbing, rescue work and mystery issues. The rodeo builds camaraderie and gives the different power companies a chance to see how others work.

Teams from Pacific Gas and Electric, Portland General Electric, St. George City Electric and other utilities and contracting companies competed in the all-day event. For some, it is a way family members can watch what needs to be done to restore power, though, in a safe environment.
