WEST VALLEY CITY — A man opened fire at a fast-food restaurant Tuesday afternoon and kept customers and employees inside the building before officers arrived, police said.
Herndon Llewellyn Konelio, 21, was armed with a gun when he walked into Chicken Express, 2836 S. 5600 West, about 1:45 p.m., according to West Valley police.
Konelio allegedly held employees and customers at bay while his firearm was visible.
West Valley police spokeswoman Roxeanne Vainuku said a person called 911 and told dispatchers two shots had been fired. At least one bullet hole could be seen in the glass in the front of the store.
No one was injured. When officers arrived, Konelio allowed everyone else in the restaurant to leave, according to police. Officers persuaded Konelio to surrender without further incident.
Vainuku said she couldn't confirm whether police are calling the incident a robbery because Konelio didn't announce his purpose for being there. She said Konelio's motive for the alleged crime was still being assessed Tuesday evening.
Konelio was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of aggravated kidnapping and discharge of a firearm. He has no criminal record in Utah.
Investigators examined the scene at Chicken Express throughout the afternoon, Vainuku said.
