With a new school year comes a new format for boys high school golf. The new format is due to the realignment of regions. This year there are seven high schools that make up Region 8, and there was a strong showing at the opening boys golf tournament held at East Bay Golf Course on Monday.
There was excitement in the air as both familiar faces and a number of new ones based on the realignment of regions as well as new golfers at a number of the schools gathered to find out what hole they would be teeing off and who they would be playing with. With the new format of all the schools playing each week, there will be around 70 golfers at each tournament. Also included are the JV teams, which is a positive for coaches to be able to see how future players do on courses they will be playing in the future.
After all the scorecards had been counted and submitted, it was the Timpview Team who took the top honors with a team score of 285. They were lead by Josh Lillywhite shooting a 64, which was also the lowest individual score for the day. Evan Moody, Matt Garry and Mike Taylor were the other three teammates that helped Timpview win this first regional tournament of the year.
There was a tie for second place between Corner Canyon, a school led by Rhett Rasmussen shooting a 65, and Orem, which was led by Brock Stanger shooting a 70. Corner Cayon received additional help from Dylan Bloechel, Jenner Allen and Logan Plummer, while Orem was supported by Josh Parker, Matt Rasmussen and Gavin Gray.
In fourth place was Alta, a team led by Tyler Affleck shooting a 76, and his teammates Kayleb Barton, McKay Dowdell and Preston Mcillece rounding out the team score.
