SALT LAKE CITY — Two people were killed after their car collided with an S-line streetcar at 2200 South and 400 East Friday evening.

South Salt Lake police spokesman Gary Keller said police got a call around 7 p.m. that an Audi driving north had failed to yield at a stop sign and collided with an eastbound S-line train.

The woman who was driving and a male passenger died, according to Keller, who said both appeared to be in their 30s.

Police said no train passengers appear were hurt.

Christian Paulsen, a passenger on the train, said he felt the carriage jerk and saw a car whip to the left of the train.

"We could just see the whole time, the guy in his car, he was unresponsive, and that was probably the scariest thing — no one being able to help," Paulsen said.

The streetcars on the low-speed S-line travel at about 20 to 25 mph. Keller said there are no gates or warning lights at the intersection, but traffic is expected to yield to the train at the stop sign.

Police are not sure if speed, alcohol or drugs played a role. Keller said there were "a lot more unknowns than knowns at this time."

The intersection was closed and passengers were being shuttled between 500 East and Central Point Station as police investigated, according to the Utah Transit Authority.
