The recent editorial about Beijing winning the bid by default for the 2022 Olympic Games reminds me how much the Olympics are not about the actual sports, but about the host city or country getting recognition for hosting the games. It’s more about sponsorship than anything else.

That’s why I’m glad the editorial concluded by saying that, should Salt Lake City ever host the games again, we need to host them on our own terms. That means doing it with the similar budget of $2 billion that we had in Salt Lake, and not the $51 billion budget in Sochi. People need to know that Olympics are about sportsmanship between countries and not about sponsors plastering their name all over the games.
