PAYSON — A Tooele man died on Mount Nebo Saturday after falling 1,500 feet, according to the Utah County Sheriff's Office.

The man was identified by deputies as Gregory Bronder, 40.

Around 11:30 a.m., Bronder and two other climbers were hiking Mount Nebo to train for a planned excursion to Mount Rainier in Washington state.

While crossing a saddle between two peaks, Bronder fell. His companions attempted emergency care but Bronder's injuries were too severe and he died as a result of the fall, according to Utah County Sheriff's Lt. Erik Knutzen.

Emergency responders from Utah and Juab counties responded to the accident, Knutzen said.

Bronder was a volunteer firefighter with Tooele City.
