Contact your legislators and voice your opinions on moving the prison. I have talked to construction people who say the Rio Tinto site has such a high water table that they pumped water out to process the copper out of the ore. They say you might have to go down 60 to 100 feet to hit bedrock, and it will cost more like $160 million to $200 million to prepare the site, with the constant problem of a high water table.
Only the Oquirrh and Wasatch prison pods need to be replaced, as they were built in the early '50s. The Promontory men’s facility was built in 1997, the Timpanogos women’s facility was built in 1983 and the Genesis Youth Center are all in great shape for years to come.
A survey taken at the prison from staff, visitors, suppliers and volunteers was 93 percent in favor of the present site.
