SPRINGVILLE — The city will hold a special bond election this year to decide whether to approve a bond for a new aquatic center. In 2011, with the goal of replacing and enhancing the Springville Community Pool, the city held a bond election for a new recreation center. Voters rejected the bond.
Since that election, several Springville residents have participated on an Aquatic Center Exploratory Committee to make recommendations to the City Council concerning the need and options for a future aquatics center. Residents had voiced concerns about the need for Springville to construct a new pool and for more activities for youths.
The committee recommended to the City Council that the city should hold a bond election on Nov. 3 for an aquatics and activities center. The recommended center is smaller than the facility proposed in 2011 and will cost residents less to build and operate. If the bond is approved, construction will start in 2016.
The center would be located on city property at 700 South and 1250 West, and include a 25-meter by 25-yard multi-use pool, a 6,400-square-foot indoor leisure pool, and an outdoor water play area and splash pad. There will also be a 24,000-square-foot indoor activities center with basketball courts, weightlifting, exercise rooms and an indoor track.
