MURRAY — A man wounded in an officer-involved shooting has been released from the hospital and booked into the Salt Lake County Jail.
On Aug. 9, Joby James Romano, 46, of Levan, was shot in the face by Murray police officer Jimmy Haas after Romano allegedly pointed his gun twice at Haas while running away from him.
Haas was investigating a reported burglary near 6150 S. 725 East. Haas spotted Romano coming out of a restroom at Southwood Park.
"Mr. Romano pulled a handgun from his waistband and pointed it at officer Haas. Officer Haas pulled his duty pistol and attempted to fire as Mr. Romano ran to the east," according to a statement released by Sandy police, the agency investigating the shooting.
Romano then stopped again and pointed his handgun at Haas, who then fired his pistol and struck Romano in the face, the statement reads.
Romano was released from Intermountain Medical Center on Thursday. He was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of assault on a police officer, burglary and theft.
State court records indicate Romano's criminal history in Utah dates back to 1988, including felony convictions for drug possession, burglary, possession of a controlled substance, and possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute; and misdemeanor convictions for intoxication, domestic violence, assault, theft and possession of a controlled substance.
The Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office is expected to review the use of force by the officer on Aug. 28.
