WEST JORDAN — Children and employees at a day care center were told to stay inside and nearby residents were evacuated Friday afternoon while Questar Gas crews worked to repair a natural gas leak.
The leak was reported about 2:20 p.m. by construction workers who hit the line in the middle of the road while performing a pipeline project at 7800 S. Old Bingham Highway, said West Jordan Fire Department Deputy Chief Reed Scharman.
Firefighters were on hand because the leak was a fire threat, Scharman said. A car-detailing business near the day care center was closed, and about 20 condo residents were affected. Construction workers were asked to stay a safe distance away.
It was business as usual inside the day care center late Friday afternoon, but it would be unsafe for the children to go outdoors, according to Scharman.
"The location of the break is fairly near their building and so we wouldn’t want them coming outside," he said. "That would put them in danger."
Some of the natural gas dissipated into the air, and Questar fixed the leak by about 4:30 p.m.
Children met their parents away from the day care because of the heavy equipment in the area, Scharman said.
Questar remained on site to evaluate what permanent repairs to the line were needed.
