In his recent article, Richard Davis, a BYU professor, shares his very liberal views (“What is our society turning to — Bedford Falls or Pottersville?” Aug. 19). Notice that in Bedford Falls, the "interest" on the savings of hardworking people was used to build homes.

Today, many people do not understand the concept of savings and living below their means. They "borrow" money to buy expensive homes, lease new cars and take out huge student loans. Dave Ramsey decried this practice in his article a few days ago (“Never lease or finance a car,” Aug. 18). Unions are not the panacea for the working poor. They have created unrealistic wages and benefits for their workers.

Now these so-called "evil" big businesses are outsourcing jobs to avoid paying these high wages and benefits, including paying the heavy tax burdens the federal government imposes on them. Unfortunately, the liberals are now touting Medicaid expansion in Utah. Every penny the federal government provides us for Medicare expansion is borrowed. And in the next few years our state will be forced to take over paying for this very expensive program.

People and the government have created their own Pottersvilles because of their outrageous borrowing and spending habits. They are using the European countries as their model, yet the European countries are going bankrupt. Haven't we learned yet that we must take personal responsibility for ourselves, and be self-reliant?
