TOOELE — An 8-year-old boy is in critical condition after being hit by a vehicle while riding his bike, police say.

Tooele City Police Sgt. Jeremy Hansen said the boy rode out of his driveway on the 700 N. block of 200 West and was near the middle of the road when he was struck by a northbound vehicle around 6 p.m.

The investigation is ongoing, but police don't believe the driver was speeding, according to Hansen.

He said the residential street has seen "heavy traffic" over the past three or four months after construction reduced the city's main thoroughfare to one lane in each direction.

"We have been running radar on that street every possible minute we've been available," Hansen said. "Our speed car has even been out on that street, so we're doing all we can, but there's so much traffic because everything off Main Street's getting diverted."

The boy was flown to Primary Children's Hospital in critical condition, police said.
