OREM — The Utah Women & Leadership Project will host an event called Cents and Sensibility: Women and Money on Sept. 9 to educate young women about the importance of proper money management.
Launched in 2013 through the Women's Success Center at Utah Valley University, the goal of the project is to conduct descriptive research on the status of women in top leadership positions within Utah; assist Utah women in finding women's groups, networks, and associations throughout the state; link these groups together to enhance networking; and provide additional links and resources to help prepare and advance women for leadership.
“One of the things we struggle with is to make young women understand that (managing money) is important and that they should even care,” said Susan Madsen, director of the Utah Women & Leadership Project. “Basic finance principles are key.”
She said educating women about money can be a powerful tool to help boost their self-confidence and promote self-reliance, particularly among young women, single mothers and women who unexpectedly find themselves head of their households.
The event will run from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in UVU's Ragan Theater and includes three breakout sessions: “Show Me the Money” — specifically for high school and college students, “A Man Is Not a Financial Plan” and “Family Finance Boot Camp.”
The featured speaker will be Gail Miller, owner and chairwoman of the Larry H. Miller Group of Companies.
The event is partnered with the Utah Education Network, which will have live streaming online and broadcast the event on UEN-TV. Additionally, videos of the sessions will be available at uen.org.
“If people come and engage, they can walk away and feel a lot more confident in what they can do (for themselves),” Madsen said.
